Playing Time

With the goal of developing basketball players the MBA has the following playing time philosophy: on all In-house teams players will be given equal playing time which usually means half the game. In cases where there are not ten players, the coaches will make sure playing time is as equal as possible. The only exceptions to this rules are: injury, sickness, foul-trouble, and as a consequence of missed practices.

Coaching Philosophy and Conduct

The purpose of the Mahtomedi Basketball Association is to provide an opportunity to develop basketball players in the Mahtomedi community. MBA programs help players develop basketball skills as well as provide an opportunity to implement those skills at a level that is comparable with that player's skill level. Traveling basketball can be highly competitive with a strong time commitment. In-house is slightly less competitive with a lesser time commitment.

We expect our players, coaches, parents and fans to treat each other and other players, coaches and officials with respect and to resolve all differences in a way that respects all those involved and develops lifetime skills for our young participants. The MBA Rules Committee will act as a mediation or sounding board if situations arise that have not been resolved by the players, coaches, parents and Traveling or In-house directors.

We require our coaches adhere to the following rules of conduct:

  1. KEEP THE GAME FUN!
  2. Do not use abusive language or behavior; treat players, coaches and fans with respect. You represent our association and our community and also serve as a leader to our players, parents and fans.
  3. Correct inappropriate behavior sensitively; focus on the behavior, not the person.
  4. Eliminate blame. Create an atmosphere where it is OK to make mistakes. Make sure your players respect each other and do not unduly criticize the mistakes of others.
  5. Build trusting professional relationships with players and parents and do all you can to have open lines of communication. Foster an environment where it is comfortable for your players or parents to tell you how they feel about the team to keep potential controversies to a minimum.
  6. Recognize and reinforce effort.
  7. Respect the integrity and judgement of the officials.
  8. Lose and win with dignity and integrity.

We require our players, parents and fans to exhibit good sportsmanship and to adhere to the following rules of conduct:

  1. Keep cheering positive.
  2. Respect the opposing teams and fans.
  3. Learn and understand the rules of the game.
  4. Respect the integrity and judgement of the officials.
  5. Accept victory or defeat with dignity.

The Mahtomedi Basketball Association has a zero tolerance rule for abusive language and behavior. This applies to all coaches, players, parents, and fans.
