What is the Youth Program?

The Mahtomedi Basketball Association offers an introduction to basketball for 1st and 2nd graders. Participants must live within, or attend school (public or private) within, the geographic boundary of the Mahtomedi School.

The Mahtomedi Youth Basketball mission is to develop and deliver a quality program where kids can have fun through sport participation; develop positive self-character and respect; learn skills and rules of the game; learn the value of sportsmanship and teamwork; develop friendships and sound attitudes about winning and losing.

This program helps young children learn and develop the skills of basketball, while emphasizing good sportsmanship, team play, and fun.

Participants meet one night a week on some Friday nights from 6-7 pm for approximately eight weeks during the months of January through March.

Youth Basketball Registration will begin in November. Sign up and information will come home through the schools in Mahtomedi.

This program is significantly different from the programs of other major sporting bodies who emphasize the breeding of future champions, rather than encouraging children to play sport because it's a fun part of a healthy lifestyle.

"We firmly believe that if we make basketball a fun and rewarding activity for kids, we can attract kids back to sports participation. If kids really take an interest in the sport of basketball and want to grow their talent, the Mahtomedi Basketball Association has the infrastructure in place that can assist them in advancement."
-Neal Fox youth director, of Mahtomedi Basketball Association.

There will be approximately 8 players per team and sixteen players per full court. Scrimmages will be 4 on 4. There will be combined equal gender and grade level girls' and boys' teams. Space is limited due to gym availability; a total of 126 participants. A waiting list may apply. Team coaches will provide you other information. Following each session the participant is encouraged to attend the home varsity basketball game that evening.
